QUALIFICATIONS FOR A DEACON
Deacon nominations are being accepted by the Nominating Committee. Please submit nomination(s) of those who meet the scriptural qualifications outlined in scripture and our by-laws below.
1 Timothy 3:8-13 NIV
In the same way, deacons are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons. In the same way, the women are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything. A deacon must be faithful to his wife and must manage his children and his household well. Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.
ARTICLE IX : DEACONS (Connect Church By-Laws)
SECTION 1. Role and Responsibilities
Deacons will uphold the Biblical qualification of a deacon found in, 1 Timothy 3. Deacons will seek to accomplish the responsibilities given to them by the spiritual leaders of the first church in Acts 6. They will provide prayer and spiritual support for the church’s widows and those who are homebound. They will also serve in the benevolent ministries of the church. They will assist the Pastor in communion. When called upon they may carry out the administration of designated funds for benevolent ministries. Deacons provide support to the pastors as they visit the sick and comfort the families of the dying and those under duress. They will pray for the services and ministries of The Church.
SECTION 2. Selection and Tenure
Deacons will be appointed by the SLT and affirmed by voice vote in The Church’s annual Membership Meeting. The SLT may call upon The Church’s active members to nominate individuals to serve as deacons but the final appointment remains the sole responsibility of the SLT. They shall serve for a period of four (4) years after which it is recommended they take a one-year break in their service. Ordained Deacons are exempt from term limits.
SECTION 3. Meetings and Structure
As in the first church in Jerusalem, deacons are not charged with the responsibilities of administrating the affairs or business of The Church. They are not a governing body for The Church. Therefore meetings will be solely for the purpose of praying and planning for their Biblical role of service.
